The four films done for the Stephen Lewis Foundation by Liz are lovely works of art. They show an exquisite eye for camera and aesthetics, but they also show an astonishing sensibility for the people and circumstance and emotions they convey. Doing a film of any kind about AIDS is an exercise in anguish. Through some magical talent, and an all-consuming inner empathy, Liz turns heartbreak into hope, even joy; sometimes a radiant joy. The audience reactions among Canadians ring with bravos. The audience reactions among Africans ring with tears and admiration. How did she manage to be so miraculously true to the human condition? This is a maker of films of whom the world will have much to hear.

I met Liz in 2000, right after she returned from filming in Sierra Leone during the war. She was a young, passionate, brave camerawoman/director, and I knew right away that nothing would stop her. She has gone on to do so many wonderful films, and her work has continually been informed by a beautiful artistic sensibility, an ability to convey complicated world issues through powerful people stories, and a gutsy, yet respectful approach to her subjects. She brings vitality, life and compassion into everything she does.

Liz Marshall was wonderful to work with. I'm not usually comfortable making videos or watching myself in them, but she made a video for me that I felt was really honest and beautiful.

Liz's films and photography capture not only the interest of her audience but also their hearts. While her work informs us about some of the most gripping issues of the world today, her touching films are impossible to watch without becoming emotionally involved.

I have had the honour to work with Liz Marshall on 3 music videos. She is an extremely dedicated and creative director with a huge vision and she gives herself tirelessly to all the projects I have worked on with her, and to other projects I have been able to see such as her work with War Child Canada and with the Stephen Lewis Foundation. She cares deeply about the world in which we live and actively tries to make it a better place through her work as well as in her daily life. I find her films very moving and dramatic and meaningful, but she can also have a sense of fun. I hope I have the opportunity to collaborate with her on many future projects.

Working with Liz Marshall has been an enriching experience, both personally and professionally. Liz directed and co-produced three half hour documentaries as well as an introductory film for the Stephen Lewis Foundation. She led a team of three people during a seven-week visit to some of the grassroots organizations we support in South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Kenya and returned with 72 hours of stunning footage and hundreds of photographs that truly capture the dignity and sophistication of individuals working at the frontlines in Africa to support women, orphans and grandmothers. The documentary project grew in scope and complexity as the year progressed and Liz rose to the occasion every time; reshaping narratives, offering solutions, reworking text and music. Her passion for the issue and commitment to the artistic process is noteworthy. These films have proven to be valuable tools for community event organizers who are fundraising across Canada in support of the Foundation to help ease the pain of HIV/AIDS in Africa. They put a human face to the issue and bring the voices of the grassroots in Africa to the grassroots of Canada in a touching and beautiful way.

My experience working with Liz was an absolutely enjoyable collaboration. She is a director who is fiercely passionate, curious and driven and also extremely sensitive to the people she works with on both sides of the camera. Liz has a natural ability to connect deeply with her documentary subjects and she is very much at ease in difficult or challenging shooting scenarios and I was always amazed at how cool she could be in the trickiest of situations and still come away with beautiful material. Liz is someone I deeply admire and hope to continue to work with in the future.
